High demand

The career possibilities for software personnel are unlimited. The demand is high in all industry verticals including finance, aerospace, communications, high technology, and all things that find an overlap.

The best part about the software sector is that it is a rising career field and decline is in sight. This takes way the concerns of job insecurity, low wages, stagnation, and career breaks. The demand for software personnel is driven by the strong migration of industry organizations into cloud strategies to tackle the pandemic-induced challenges and save on costs.

According to LinkedIn, the demand for software developer roles such as web developers, full-stack developers, and cloud engineers had been growing 25 percent in the past few years.

Industry estimates paint a positive picture as developer jobs are surging by a whopping 22 percent, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

The main driver in software development jobs has been the surging applications on smartphones and tablets.  Also, the consumer electronics segment is also supporting the growth with more and more computer systems incorporated into them.

Recent trends have created many highest-paying jobs in software development. In domains ranging from artificial intelligence to information security, top positions are highly rewarding.  Many brilliant developers reach team leader positions after proving themselves in the following roles. These are the highest-paying jobs in the software development arena.

  • Computer Systems Manager
  • Information Systems Manager
  • Computer Network Architect
  • Data Scientist
  • Software Developer
  • Information Security Analyst

Software jobs outlook

In 2021, the rise of remote hiring by companies has been notable as they wanted to explore candidate pools outside established tech hubs.

According to Josh Brenner, CEO of Vettery that owns tech recruitment agency Hired, the focus on remote employee hiring will continue.

The demand for expert developers well versed in languages like Java and JavaScript remains strong. Modern programming languages like Go, Rust, and Dart are up in popularity.

Java is the second most in-demand skill sought by employers, after SQL, according to Indeed. Python programming is the third most in-demand skill, adds the study by Indeed.

Full-stack developers demand up

The demand is high for those with proficiency in both front-end and back-end technologies. According to HackerRank’s 2020 Developer Skills Report, hiring managers “agree that full-stack developers are top priority,” with 38 percent saying it is the No. 1 role.

Creative mind plus engineering skills

The job of a software developer needs a creative mind to make a mark in the design and implementation of programs.

Software developers have to conceive, build computer programs and create new applications for mobile and desktop platforms.  Software developers exercise creativity after ascertaining user needs to build programs and test out new software and bolster the performance.

They work in sync with computer programmers to fill crucial roles in the computer systems, manufacturing, finance, and software publishing industries.

Qualifications and skills

The entry into software development does not warrant a degree. But a degree in software development and related disciplines like computer science and computer programming are preferred.

There are many online courses to build qualifications even without a full-time study. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), developers earn a median annual salary of $105,590.

Software developers need to have a strong command of programming languages including ASP.NET, JavaScript, Java, C#, and Python. Experience as an intern at a software company is valuable. Although writing code is not a priority, developers should have a strong background in computer programming. They must be immaculate on new tools and computer languages.

Compelling attractions of the career

As a career software developer job is great. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the number of software developer jobs in the U.S. is set to grow 24 percent until 2026.

In the US, thousands of software developer jobs are unfilled and that number will soar as developers continue to be in short supply.

Top in-demand freelance skill

A survey also revealed that software development is one of the 20 in-demand freelance skills. It also pays well. The average developer salary is pretty high, according to BLS data and the reason is high demand. For women developers, their earnings are 33 percent more than other women in traditional roles.

Lateral entry without a college degree

As noted software development has a low barrier entry. Even without a degree in computer science, a software developer job is possible.

A survey said 56 percent of software developers are without a computer science degree, with 69 percent developers saying they are self-taught.

The report on software development job trends noted “willingness to learn” is the most important criteria when hiring software developers and a college degree is not a big urgency. The willingness to learn matters more than a degree.

Software developers have multiple ways to augment learning and skills including online courses, doing programming, boot camps, and earning certifications.

Software development is a flexible career

There is also the flexibility of work from home for Software developers and a need to move to tech hubs to do regular work. A survey found 53 percent of programmers saying remote work as more rewarding.

The flexible career path is helping software developers to climb the career ladder and assume roles of senior developers and become sought-after architects and developers with core specialization in specific skills and languages. They can also become tech-entrepreneurs.

Ever-changing field with sunrise sectors

The software field is an ever-changing one with a slew of programming languages and emerging technologies such as Blockchain, AI, Progressive web apps, Low-code development, and Cybersecurity.
