A unique course based on the research methods learning exercises that the instructor (Dr Anna Heyman ) has found to be most effective, over a 19 year period of teaching and training dissertation students and novice researchers. The course is doubly unique in the fact that it explains meta-analysis alongside systematic review, so that students can include meta-analysis in their systematic reviews and understand the whole spectrum of literature review types.

Course Information

At least two years of social science or health science study, or the professional equivalent
Ability to enter figures into a datasheet
Ability to use a calculator

Link between research processes and problem solving in professional practice
Purposes of narrative review, meta-analysis and systematic review
Skills for extracting figures from individual studies
Methods for rating studies and weighing up evidence
When to use different types of evidence, including expert opinion or qualitative
How statistical tests work and what they do
